Anambra State Government Immortalized Prof. Akuyili
Nigerians will never forget the impacts made both locally and globally by the late Prof. Dora Akunyili, the woman, the legend. And now Anambra state government might be posed to honour the legend of the woman
Prof. Dora Nkem Akunyili (OFR) was born in Makurdi, Benue State (Nigeria) on the 14th of July 1954 to Chief & Mrs Paul Young Edemobi. She is a devout Catholic and is happily married to Dr. J.C. Akunyili, a Medical Practitioner and they are blessed with six children and three grandchildren. Her hobbies include reading, writing, cooking and travelling. She speaks Igbo and English fluently.
Prof. Akunyili, is an internationally renowned Pharmacist, Pharmacologist, Erudite Scholar, Seasoned Administrator, and a visionary leader.
In line with the custom of celebrating our legends and in accordance with the part of our National Anthem which says, "The labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain", Anambra Assembly has urged the State Governor, Chief Obiano, to immortalise former Minister, Prof. Dora Akunyili.And yesterday all Anamberian trooped out in mass to Immortalize this Iconic Legend.
She was a great woman who dedicated her all to her job as the Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Following her appointment as the Director General of NAFDAC in April 2001, Dora who was disheartened by the sale of fake goods and drugs, prioritized the eradication of counterfeit drugs in Nigeria.
She took on the “fake drugs cabal”, including her kinsmen at a considerable risk to her personal safety in her fight against fake goods and drugs
.
The Anambra State Government on Saturday 5th September, 2015 hold a memorial ceremony in honor of the late Professor Dora Nkem Akunyili, OFR, former Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and Minister of Information and Communications.
As part of the memorial ceremony, the State Government has named the State Women Development Centre after Professor Akunyili in recognition of her sterling contributions and outstanding service to Anambra State and Nigeria in general
.
The ceremony also feature a con celebrated Holy Mass, a documentary on the life and times of the late Professor Dora Akunyili, tributes by the academia, representatives of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and some top government functionaries.
The people of Anambra state called the move a good development while others opined that she deserves more.
